Song of the yearSmoke Gets In Your Eyes performed by Irene Dunne in Roberta

Artist of the year : Billie Holiday
Born in Baltimore, the little Eleonora Fagan saw hardly ever her father who played jazz in nightclubs and escaped in the early morning whereas Sadie, her mother, lived on casual jobs entrusting most of the time her daughter to her family. She would keep from her childhood fearsome images as the sudden death of her grandmother while she held her in her arms or when she was raped by a pedophile uncle. Sadie eventually left Baltimore and took her daughter to live with her in New York. She was mostly raised in a brothel where her mother was working. The young Eleonora became familiar to this chaotic background over which prevailed the mob and where violence daily raged.

She even went to jail for a while. She moreover sometimes attended speakeasies, these backroom establishments where alcohol was drunk while listening to jazz musicians. It is in one of these places that she met Kenneth Hollon, a young saxophonist with whom she got a first hiring at the age 15. She took then Billie Holiday's stage name and did not delay coming across producer John Hammond who suggested her to perform a recording session in the Columbia studios together with a young promising clarinetist named Benny Goodman.
She received in return a meager $ 35 fee but this rather successful performance was soon worth to her singing with the band of Fletcher Henderson then beside Duke Ellington. She started at the same time an affair with saxophonist Ben Webster.
In 1935, John Hammond was back to herfor a new series of recordings with Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson. Success did not delay, Miss Brown To You appearing among the best-selling records of the year.
