The Yearly GELT's TOP 1949

Artist of the Year: Jimmy Preston, the man who forever sang the first rock song.
Bandleader, drummer, tenor sax blower and singer, Jimmy Preston was part of the popular R&B trend thriving since the end of Worl War II through musicians like Louis Jordan,  Amos Milburn, Roy Brown and others.
It belongs besides to him and Wynonie Harris to have been the most symbolic forerunners of rock "n" roll by handing on a plate some titles that Bill Haley only had to appropriate a few years later. As for the origin of the word rock n’roll itself, the authorship of which always remains controversial, even if the Boswell Sisters had made one of their titles in  the 30s, we owe it for the first time to Wynonie Harris with lyrics like All She Wants To Do Is Rock, Rock n' Roll  All Night Long.
